ABOUT US

Our Mission

The mission of North Allegheny Rowing Association (NARA) is to promote a competitive rowing program for the school district's high school students that embodies the central elements of sportsmanship and ethics through the principles of respect, trustworthiness, responsibility, fairness, and good citizenship. We also emphasize character building and personal growth through winning and losing with dignity and self-control.

A Brief History

North Allegheny High School was the first high school in the Pittsburgh area to form a rowing team.  A small band of students began rowing as a lifetime activity in 1989 on Washington's Landing.  In those early days, the team borrowed well-worn equipment which was stored in old trailers.  We became recognized as a club sport in 2001.  Every year the team is growing stronger and getting larger.

Rowing for North Allegheny

North Allegheny Rowing is a member of the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association. We have two racing seasons (Fall & Spring) and indoor strength & conditioning training during the winter months.

At North Allegheny Rowing, we are comprised of three different racing levels: 1) Novice- first year rowers regardless of age, 2) JV- anyone after their first calendar year of high school racing, and 3) Varsity- all seniors or anyone ready to race at the highest level.

In addition to high school rowing, we provide a developmental (dev) team for middle schoolers in 7th and 8th grade. The dev team is a part time commitment and training is focused on fun and learning a new sport! No experience is necessary to join our middle school dev team - we have a dedicated dev team coach who will teach you everything you need to know. Local scrimmages are also organized to provide our dev team members a chance to race.
